Sua Sponte

Sua Sponte is the motto of US Army Rangers.  It is a Latin phrase that means “of one’s own accord/will.”

The US Army Rangers are an elite special operations combat unit composed of individuals who by their own will have chosen to volunteer and embark upon the exacting rigors and requirements of becoming an elite US Army Ranger.  The reality is, however, there are only a few who of their own will/accord are able to overcome the enormous mental and physical challenges of becoming a Ranger.  Ultimately, those who succeed to become a Ranger fully embrace, embody, and understand the meaning of Sua Sponte, “of one’s own accord,” and truly comprehend that it is embedded in everything they do, no matter the challenge.

Rangers recite every day The Ranger Creed and throughout the creed is threaded the meaning of Sua Sponte.  The last phrase however exemplifies the meaning “of one’s own accord:”

“Readily will I display the intestinal fortitude required to fight on to the Ranger objective and complete the mission though I be the lone survivor.”

Sua Sponte is not only a Ranger virtue but is a virtue applicable to those that choose greatness!  It is not only for combat but even more so in the battle of life.  It is in the battles of life that each of us as individuals must “of our own will/accord” display the intestinal fortitude to complete the mission, do what is right even if all others have fallen away and we are the only one standing.
