Are you reading this article on your phone right now? Most of you probably are! If not, I'm sure it is right next to you, if you are anything like me. Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, texting, phone calls, email- all of these are constantly demanding your attention. If you unplug from your

social media for even a few minutes you could miss something important! This technology is an incredible way to stay up-to-date with the world. However, there is a dangerous side effectto constant updates and too many ongoing conversations.

Of course everyone knows that you are not supposed to text and drive. But is driving the only time that you need to be fully alert and paying attention? Ask yourself this: when was the last time you were on your phone while walking through a parking lot? What about at the mall? The grocery store? Anytime your attention is fixed on your phone while in a crowded place, you are putting yourself at risk.

One of the best ways to learn how to protect yourself is by thinking like a potential attacker would. Imagine if you were a predator looking for your next victim. Two separate women walk out of Wal-Mart in front of you. One is looking around, scanning the parking lot and walking with confidence. The other has her eyes glued to her IPhone. She is in her own world, thinking about the group message between her and her friends. Which one is the predator more likely to attack?

So what is the ultimate moral here? Wherever you are, be 100% there. Don't leave your brain somewhere else. Instead of a habit of constantly checking your phone, make it a habit to only check it at certain times or places when you know that there is not a threat to your safety. This isn't a crazy martial arts skill, and this isn't paranoia: it's just common sense.
