Winners Never Quit

One of my favorite events here at Pride Martial Arts, Spar Wars, took place this last weekend. This was a point kickboxing tournament that is designed to let our most ambitious students get in the ring and show off their skill. And I speak for all of the coaches when I say that every single child who competed did a fantastic job! I got to be a corner coach for several of the kids, and they exhibited near-flawless courage and skill: as did their opponents. There was so much heart, as well as technique, displayed in the ring that many fights were extremely difficult to call! I hate to see any of the kids lose after giving their all. But if there is one thing that I know about competition, it is that you learn much more from losing than you do from winning!

I have lost my fair share of fights, but one thing that keeps me going is the ability to learn from my experiences. After every loss, I analyze the experience to make sure that same thing doesn’t happen again. Then, it is time to put that to the test! Remember that it is only a failure if you let it get you down permanently! NOW is the time to get back into the ring and go for the gold! No one has ever become great because they quit when things got tough. Babe Ruth, one of the greatest hitters in the history of baseball, said this: “Every strike brings me closer to the next home run.” Greatness is achieved by overcoming obstacles, and using your experiences to give you the upper hand.

In classes at Pride, we are beginning to examine a new word this month: Perseverance. Perseverance simply means to keep at it, and never quit until you reach your goal. I must say, I am proud of the competitors I have seen back in class this week, already working hard to fine-tune their kickboxing skills. They are ready for the next tournament, and I assure you, they are a force to be reckoned with! This is the attitude I wish from all of our students; not just in kickboxing, but also in every area of their life. Winners never quit. Quitters never win.
